Maureen Drennan.

Maureen Drennan, created a series of 11 photos in order to help her husband through his severe bout of depression. The series ranges from portraits of her husband and stark landscape photographs. The series is entitles “The Sea That Surrounds Us” which as a sufferer of depression, I think is a well thought out, relatable, but also beautiful name. When we are struck by the grip of depression, we feel as though we are drowning. It’s the perfect name. The landscape images are of isolation, loneliness, and distant. And the portraits, can also be seen to have loneliness and distance within them, especially in her husbands eyes. I feel that using both landscape and portraiture work extremely well, which wasn’t my initial thought when reading about the series before I viewed it. This has given me a lot of inspiration for my Masters this year, I feel that, since achieving the results I have with DÉPRIMÉ, where before DÉPRIMÉ, I was a Fine Art Photographer, who liked to create. In photographing my depression using live subjects like flowers, I’ve found my subject of photography, my Depression.
